The foolish indulgence and pampering of the rich mistress, Mrs. Pumphrey was the real cause of Tricki miserable condition. In her affection and love for her pet, she gave her sweet food, Horlicks, cream cakes, chocolates, etc. as many times as the dog demanded. This sweet and fatty food made Tricki enormously fat.  

James Herriot suggested her not to give the dog such type of food; and also suggested her to make Tricki do exercise. But Mrs. Pumphrey did not follow the narrator’s advice.

Tricki ould not be treated at home because Mrs. Pumphrey did not stop pampering him. She would allow him all type of food which was dangerous for his health.

Mrs. Pumphrey was a rich lady and she had a dog named Tricki. She pampered her dog very much and loved him like her own baby. She used to give him food like malt, horlicks and cakes and many things that was not good for Tricky’s health. These foods made Tricky very ill and he became fat. The narrator suggested her not to give such food to dog and told her to take Tricky to hospital. But Mrs. Pumphrey didn’t listen because she didn’t want to separate from her dog. After listening to narrator also she didn’t stop pampering Tricky that made him sicker.
