Land erosion by water that has led to serious land degradation in foothills of Shivaliks. Gully erosion is highly prevalent here.
Northeastern parts of India:
Slash and burn or Jhum cultivation is the major reason for soil erosion in northeastern parts of India. Burning patches of land for cultivation renders such areas without trees. As such, the soil cover becomes loose. Herein, the patches of land are used for cultivation until they lose their fertility. Such loose and infertile land areas are prone to soil erosion by wind and water.
Arid regions:
Wind is the major reason for soil erosion in such areas. Arid areas have little or no vegetation. As a result, the soil cover is loose and is blown away by wind.

the reasons are:

1.The Top soil in most parts just simply lie on rocky surfaces and does not get firm grip on the rock.

2.deforestation is one of the major cause for soil erosion as the barren space is left exposed to flowing rainwater and blowing wind carrying particles of the soil with them.

3.For some foothills of state like meghalaya is receiving the highest amount of rainfall annually. hundreds of tonnes of soil is carried away by rivers to the nearest plain (Bangladesh) every year.

4.agricultural cultivation also contributed to soil erosion to a large extent. here, the soil may lose due to ploughing and hence easily carried away by erosion agencies.
