According to the problem the particle is moving along with x axis , let the force f acting on it.

Now according to the diagram we can see that when the particle starts moving from origin and reaches at x = x1 position the force is zero

and when the particle moves the distance of x>x1 the force is positive

Therefore the force is going further and will not return back

again when the particle starts moving from origin and reaches at x = x1 position the force is zero but at this position the force is negative.

therefore equilibrium is stable here.
