The force that is exerted on an object by a solid surface is called normal force.


For instance, a person cannot walk through a wall because of the normal force exerted by the solid surface (wall) on the object (person) which does not allow it to pass through.


That is why, instead of passing through, the person is hurt. Normal force can only be exerrted when both the surfaces are in contact with each other.
