The force that binds the particles of matter together is known as Intermolecular force of attraction.

Intermolecular forces are forces that exist between atoms to bind the molecules.

Types of intermolecular forces:

  • Dipole-dipole interactions: This happens when the partially positive charged part of the molecule interacts with the partially negative charged. These are the strongest intermolecular force of attraction. Like in HCl the force keeps the H (Hydrogen) atom bonded to Cl (Chlorine) atom
  • Hydrogen bonding: This happens when a hydrogen atom is bonded to either oxygen, nitrogen, or fluorine atom. the compounds formed have high boiling points and melting points like H2O (water).
