Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation, said these invaluable words when India was on the verge of being unshackled from British rule.
Bapu's words implied we were far too long under the influence of foreign education, culture and way of life; unless we devised methods to change these and usher in our own methods and processes we would not be gaining true independence from foreign rule. He wanted Indians to become truly unique by imbibing their own values, formulating their own methods of education and developing their own culture to be able to stand tall in the comity of nations.
Today, we find ourselves in a similar situation. While it is true the world has shrunk considerably due largely to globalisation, but we seem to ape the west unflinchingly. Should we not be retaining our values and culture at the core, before adopting the better elements of western culture? Must we not know about our culture and heritage, which have stood the test of time, when we communicate with foreigners? We tend to lose our unique identity by becoming blind followers, thereby forgetting the message given to us by the father of our nation over seventy years ago. In effect, therefore, we become followers rather than leaders.Ā
