The formation of the fertilization membrane was found by Letter JOHN RUNNSTROM, LUDWIK MONNE & ELSA WICKLUND in a sea urchin.  

After the fertilization of the egg with one sperm cell or male gamete there occurs a thick membrane which is formed around the egg to prevent it from further fertilization of different eggs, so that it can avoid from multiple fertilizations using different male gametes. This serves as a protective layer for the developing zygote.
