Upon germination, the tube cell forms the pollen tube through which the generative cell migrates to enter the ovary. During its transit inside the pollen tube, the generative cell divides to form two male gametes (sperm cells).

In angiosperms, the diploid pollen mother cell undergoes meiosis I followed by meiosis II to form a tetrad having 4 haploid microspores. This tetrad separates to form forms 4 haploid pollen grains. Each pollen undergoes mitosis to give rise to mature pollen with 2 male gametes.
