Answer:

Heterosis works as basic tool for improvement of crops in the form of F1 and F2 populations. Heterosis exploitation is one of the effective techniques for improvement of cotton yields that have stagnant in recent years. Therefore, an experiment was conducted during the years 2012-2014 to explore the possibilities of utilization of some F2 hybrid combinations for commercialization. Fifteen F1 and F2 hybrids and their eight parents were tested in four replications using randomized complete block design for economic traits i.e. sympodial branches plant-1 , number of bolls plant-1 and seed cotton yield plant-1 at Four Brothers Research Centre, Multan. Results illustrated that out of 15 F1 hybrids 13 gave positive mid parent heterosis for seed cotton yield, whereas positive heterosis over better parent was observed in 9 F1 hybrids for seed cotton yield. Regarding percent increase or decrease of F2 over F1, it was observed that CIM-496 × MNH-886 and FBS-26 × M-1 depicted increased performance over F1 hybrids. The combination CIM-496 x MNH-886 produced 19.90% higher yield in F2 hybrids than F1 hybrids followed by FBS-26 x M-1 which recorded 13.67% of increase. Thus the combinations CIM-496 x MNH-886 and FBS-26 x M-1 may be utilized commercially because of the fact that the F1 seed production is very expensive hence these combinations may serve the purpose of high yields through heterosis breeding and almost 19.90% yield increase in F2 generation is quite satisfactory. These encouraging results suggest there is sufficient scope to use F2 hybrids with increased yield on commercial scale.
