Given info : The formula of the sulphide of a metal M is M₂S₃.

To find : the formula of its

  1. suphite
  2. oxide
  3. chromate

solution : we know, sulphide ion is S²⁻ it means the oxidation no of suphide ion is -2,

here chemical formula of the given metal is M₂S₃ .

let oxidation no of metal is x

so, 2x + 3(-2) = 0

⇒ x = +3

hence, the oxidation no of the metal is +3.

(1) chemical formula of suphite

suphite = SO₃²⁻  ( oxidation no = -2)

formula = M₂(SO₃)₃

(2) chemical formula of oxide

oxide = O²⁻ ( oxidation no = -2)

formula = M₂O₃

(3) chemical formula of chromate

chromate = CrO₄²⁻ ( oxidation no = -2)

formula = M₂(CrO₄)₃
