One evening, after his day's work in his fielda, he  passed by the village chaupal. Some villagers were enjoying their community hookah and enjoying a chit chat. As soon as they saw Rah Kallu called him a hard-hearted devil. Nanha, the fat sweet-seller, talked of behaviour towards children. Ramnath, the village zaildar, told his own story o im Khan, they began to speak of him in 1 row .his heartless Khan's cruelty. The old Patel of the village said that Rahim was cruel not only towards children, but towards helpless animals also. But the story behind all this seeming m Khan was as follow a 30 years had passed since Rahim Khan was married. He had two sons, Nuru and Bundu. But, he so ill-treated them that they had run away from him. Rahim Khan beat his wife almost daily. But she bore his cruelty patiently, and stayed on with him. However, there is a limit to everything. The wife also got sick of Rahim Khan's cruel behaviour and she, too, left him. She went to her brother at Nurpur. However, Rahim Khan did not feel sorry for all this That evening when he reached his hut, he felt very lonely. He had no wish to light the fire and get his dinner. He lay on his cot, feeling terribly angry. He had always been cruel to his wife and sons. 6 years ago his eldest son had left him. 30 years later his younger son, also ran away from home. For 30 years, his wife had been the target of his anger. Rahim Khan had feelings of bitterness against his family, against society and even against life But there were reasons behind Rahim Khan's cruelty. When young, he was a fine athlete. In wrestling, in Kabaddi and in diving, he had no match in the whole village He had two ambitions in life first he wanted to join a touring circus and win fame in it. Secondly, he wanted to marry Radha, a Hindu, girl, whom he loved dearly. But his parents shattered both these ambitions. They considered circus work too low for a respectable peasant boy. As for his marriage with a Hindu girl it was thought to be irreligious. Radha was married off to a middle-aged . His parents selected a Muslim girl for him and got him married against his wishes Rahim Khan bowed before social compulsions and also his father's authority. But his shattered ambitions broke his heart, From a cheerful young man, he became a heartless devil. He decided to avenge himself on his parents, his family and on society. He hardened into a beast and began to ill-treat his wife, children and even his bullocks. He came to be hated and feared. But, nobody tried to know the background of the bitterness in his Now in the absence of his wife and children, Rahim Khan started feeling lonely. He used to beat and ill-treat his wife. Rahim Khan's firat impulse was to shatter the nest and finish off the sparrows. But the parent sparrows attacked him when he tried to touch the baby sparrows. Rahim Khan bore their attack calmly. A strange feeling of pity arose in him. He made friends with the sparrows As time passed, the baby sparrows grew into fine birds. He took a ladder, went and repaired the roof even though it was raining heavily. He got wet all over, a cold. When he got up next morning, he had high fever remained in bed for several days. The villagers no longer saw him going some of them saw through the crack in his door and saw him lving his cot. He was muttering: 'O Bundu, O Nuru, who will feed you when I am gone came, with her there was no response. So, they broke open the door. Rahim Khan w his cot, and the four sparrows were fluttering about in the hut. ought he had gone mad. They informed his wife about his illness, She sons. The door was bolted from inside. They knocked at the door, but as lying dead on his  cot and the four sparrows were fluttering about in the hut.
