The fraction of total current carried by an ion is called the transport number of that ion.
- An atom or a molecule with a net electrical charge is known as an ion. An ion consists of electrons and protons which carry negative and positive change respectively.
- There are never an equal number of electrons and protons in any ion. An ion with net positive charge is known as a cation and the one with a net negative charge is called an anion.
- The flow of electrical charge observed in conducting materials or fluids such as electrolytes, plasma, etc, is known as ionic current.
- The fraction of the total current carried by an ion in an electrolyte is known as transport or transference number. It can be calculated as- Transport number of an ion = current carried by that ion/ total current carried by both the ions.
