Let the Tension in the String be T.
∴ T = (M + m)g - N
⇒ N = (M + m)g - T
Now, Friction = μN.
T = μ((M + m)g - T)
[Since, On maximum can became equal to T only, otherwise it will be less than it always.]
∴ T (1 + μ) = (M + m)μg
T = μg(M + m)/(1 + μ)
Hope it helps.
