Friction exist based on the relative motion between two surface sliding surface. ... When a surface is smooth, there is little or no resistance to motion when another smooth surface glides over it. However the result will be different if one surface is smooth and the other is rough.

Friction depends partly on the smoothness of the contacting surfaces, a greater force being needed to move two surfaces past one another if they are rough than if they are smooth
