The frog was a manipulative and mean creature indeed. He felt his career as singer threatened at the arrival of the nightingale; so he hatched a shrewd plan to regain his lost status. Fortunately, the nightingale turned out to be a foolish creature in spite of being a talented singer. She easily fell prey to the frog's cunning schemes. Finally he succeeded and became as the king of the tree.

So, the frog approached the nightingale singing on the tree and told the bird that it owned the tree on which the bird sat and sang. When the nightingale asks the frog its opinion about her song, it says that the song needs improvisation and that it can train the bird to sing better. The bird falls for the trap and the cunning frog charged her heavily for each session. He also made her sing for long hours, which made her voice hoarse. As a result, other animals in the forest who enjoyed her singing stopped listening to her.

The frog chided her saying that she was not putting in enough effort. Afraid of failing, she puffed up with all her might to sing. This broke one of her blood vessels and the nightingale died. The frog told the other animals that he had tried to train her but she allowed herself to be influenced by others. Soon, his was the only voice heard in the bog like before the nightingale arrived. This made him take the place of the king of the tree.
