Cohesive devices tell the reader what we are doing in a sentence and help to guide them through our writing. They signal to the reader what the relationships are between the different clauses, sentences and paragraphs.

We are required to state the functions of each of the cohesive devices. The functions of the cohesive devices are as under:

• Cohesive devices are words that help to connect the different ideas of the text that is given.
• A very easy example to understand cohesive is when friends meet for lunch they stick together.
• Similarly, the words that stick together are called cohesive devices.
• The cohesive devices can be broadly divided into six:
• The first type of cohesive device is Anaphoric Reference - This refers to a word in the text that refers back to other ideas in the text.
• For example, I had dinner with Sam. He looked awful.
• The second type of cohesive device is Cataphoric References -This refers to a word that you will have to read the text further to understand.
• For example, When she came, Rita saw that the room was empty.
• The third type of cohesive device is Exophoric Reference - Which refers to an idea outside the text.
• For example, When the Prime Minister visited the state he had a talk with the youth of Loyola College. Information about the person is not specified like the name of the Prime Minister.
• The fourth type is the Tense Agreement - This is used when the two tenses of the sentence are linked
• For example, She knew that now he had found out that she was telling lies.
• The fifth type of cohesive device is linkers - this is used with the help of the words, therefore, first of all, etc.
• The sixth type of cohesive device is substitution - this is when words are left out.
• For example, Please finish your homework. I know you want to go for the drive but before that please finish. Here the word homework is left out of the second part of the sentence.
