In India especially in Hindu families it is a tradition that all members of a family stay together in a house. The house is usually inherited from ancestors. It belongs to all kith and kin.

According to the ancient traditions it is common to accept the oldest person as the head of the family. As long as he or she lives generally all related person to the head of the family stay together.  This is how a join family lives.

There are many problems faced for resource sharing and funding to the needs of the members.  Still resolving those problems they stay together as usually they do not have a better place to go.

Recently in the last decade the joint families have reduced by a large scale. People prefer to live in micro families.

Joint families the head of the family is respected. Usually the property is on his or her name.

The joint family can file their taxes in the  way that our constitution and tax laws mention.  There are laws in the constitution specific to joint families related to inheritance, marriages and property sharing.

Many Hindu families like Modis, Birlas, Goenkas had joint families. Joint families with big businesses educate their children very well in business management or technologies. They usually do complementary functions in the whole business.  They establish new branches or organs for giving opportunities for their children. This is how they can live harmoniously and to the betterment of the family business.  Children continue their family tradition and family businesses.
