The Gakkel ridge is formed by the diverging of the two earth's tectonic plates, North American plate and the Eurasian plate.

The plates are moving away from each other and creating a mid-ocean ridge. But the rate of movement is very slow being less than one centimeter per year.

In various expeditions carried out, scientists have discovered proof of the existence of many volcanoes in this ridge and the presence of new species of microbial colonies.
