Shri Rajeev Gandhi, Prime Minister of India launched the Ganga action plan on 14 Jan. 1986. Its main objective was to reduce the pollution level and to improve the water quality of the Ganga River. This was to be done by Interception, Diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and present toxic and industrial chemical wastes.
