The Ganga runs its course from the Gangotri.

  • The Ganga is the most important and also the longest river in India.
  • Ganga stars from the Gangotri near Gomukh which is at a height of 3900 m situated in the district of Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand.
  • The Ganga at its originating point is knowns as Bhagirathi which flows down the narrow gorges.
  • At Devprayag Bhagirathi meets Alakananda here at this point it is known as the Ganga.
  • The Ganga enters the plain land at Haridwar which is regarded as a holy place for Hindus.
  • From here it flows towards the south and then to the south-east and towards the east before it gets split into two different tributaries which are namely Bhagirathi and Padma.
