1) There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in every human cell. Of these, one pair are called the sex chromosomes. In females, the chromosomes are XX. In males, the chromosomes are XY.

2) There are 2 types of cell division: mitosis and meiosis. In mitosis, the cell divides into two cells identical to the original cell.

3) Meiosis occurs to form male and female gametes. Here the number of chromosomes are half in each resultant cell, i.e. each contain 23 chromosomes, one of each pair. In females, meiosis results in ova with 22 chromosomes and an X chromosome. In males, meiosis results in sperms eac containing 22 chromosomes and an X or a Y chromosome.

4) When the zygote forms from the union of the male and female gametes, if the sperm containing X chromosome joins the ovum, a female is conceived. On the other hand, when the sperm containing Y chromosome joins the ovum, a male zygote is formed.

5) Thus the sex of the baby depends only on the father.
