Pescud followed Jessie Allyn all the way to her home town in Virginia. He followed her and found out where she lived with the father who was a Colonel in a huge house at the top of the hill in the biggest grove Pescud had ever seen.
On the third day, he saw Jessie walking in the front yard next to the palling fence. He stopeed and raised his hat, and asked her where Mr. Hinkle lived. The girl said that noone of that name lived in Birchtown as far as she knew. She had know that Pescud had followed her all the way to her house which was quite far away, and had almost missed the train in a couple of places.
SHe said that her father was a lineal descendant of belted earls and that he would not approve of her talking to someone like him (a drummer) over the fence. However she did seem encouraging and not very annoyed, and remembered his name.
