Answer :

In the short story 'The Portrait of a Lady' by Khushwant Singh, the grandmother was strong minded lady with strong beliefs. Her strength of character is displayed in the following manner in the story :

1. The grandmother was not a very emotional and sentimental person. This can be seen from the fact that she doesn't display any emotion when the author goes abroad for further studies.

2. Even though she was uneducated herself, she went out of the way to ensure that her grandson was well-educated. She took absolute care of her grandson and made great efforts to instill good values in him.

3. She was not scared of living alone.

4. During her final moments, she faced death boldly.  She ignored the family members and lay down peacefully on her bed. She did not waste any time and chanted her prayers in a peaceful manner.
