Since the graph of y = x² + kx + 9 touches the x axis.

=> y = x² + kx + 9 has only one zero.

=> Discriminant of x² + kx + 9 is 0.

=> k² - 4 × 1 × 9 = 0

=> k² - 36 = 0

=> k² = 36

=> k = ± 6.
