The graph shows the motion of a car on its trip home,
(i) How far from home was the car initially ?
(ii) If the car started its homeward journey at 8.30 a.m., at what time
did it reach home ?
(iii) Find the speed of the car between :
(a) A and B (b) B and C

Given:

Graph between distance and time is given,

Car started its journey at 8:30 am.

To Find:

1. Initial distance from home.

2. Time of reaching home.

3.Find the speed of the car between a) A and B

                                                             b) B and C

Solution:

As we can comprehend from the graph,

1. Initial distance = 300 kms, where the x coordinate is zero means the time is zero.

             Initial Distance= 300 km

2. time of reaching home= 10 hrs, where the x coordinate is zero means the distance is covered.

             Time of reaching home= 10 hrs.

He started at 8:30 am , so he will reach home at 8:30+10= 6:30 PM

             Time of reaching home= 6:30PM

3. Speed = total distance / total time.

Time taken from A to B , T₁ = 4-0

                                             =4 hrs.

distance from A to B , D₁= 300-100

                                             =2000 km

time taken from B to C , T₂ = 10-4

                                             =6 hrs.

Distance from B to C , D₂= 100-0

                                         = 100km

a) Speed between A and B= Distance between A and B/ time between A and B.

         S₁ = 200/4

        S₁  =50km/hr

b) Speed between B and C= Distance between B and C/ time between B and C.

        S₂=100/6

        S₂   =16.66km/hr
