‘Grasses’ however, ARE green.
Grass is typically used as a generic term for that green stuff that grows in the yard. It (grass) is usually green (if you water it, anyway). However, that green stuff that grows in the yard (and the fields) actually consists of many DIFFERENT varieties of grass, and if you mean to refer to more than one KIND of grass, then you use the plural: grasses.
Most grasses are, in fact, green. Some, however, are yellowish, or reddish.
