Answer:

  • The gravitational potential energy of an object is mgh , where m is the mass of the body , a is acclⁿ due to gravity and h is the height above the earth's surface .

Derivation:

Let an object of mass 'm' lifted at a height 'h' by applying a force 'F' .

Now work done will be equal to force × displacement × cos∅ .

  • where ∅ is the angle between the force and displacement.

Here in this case ∅ = 0° and cos0° = 1 .

=> W = F s cos∅.

=> W = F s .

=> W = ma × h .

=> W = mg × h .

=> W = mgh.

This work done is stored in the form of potential energy at a height h .

Hence P.E. = mgh.

Question:- The gravitational potential energy of a body is _________.

1. 2mgh

2. mgh

3. 2mv ⤵

Answer:-⤵

Since the force required to lift it is equal to its weight, it follows that the gravitational potential energy is equal to its weight times the height to which it is lifted. PE = kg x 9.8 m/s2 x m = joules.
