The Great Gatsby Argumentative Constructed Response
Fitzgerald is making a statement about the American Dream in his story The Great Gatsby. In Gatsby, that definition could be positive or negative, though. Which image of the American Dream do you believe Fitzgerald is portraying? Is Fitzgerald saying it stands for independence and the ability to make something of one's self with hard work, or is he saying the American Dream seems more about materialism and selfish pursuit of pleasure? Use at least two citations from the novel to support your claim. Use the RACE strategy to formulate your response.

Answer:
The Great Gatsby is a tragic love story on the surface, but it's most commonly understood as a pessimistic critique of the American Dream. In the novel, Jay Gatsby overcomes his poor past to gain an incredible amount of money and a limited amount of social cache in 1920s NYC, only to be rejected by the "old money" crowd. He then gets killed after being tangled up with them.
