The Great Wall of China is said to be one man made structure which can be seen from the moon.
This 1500 mile long wall is one of the seven wonders of the world . It crosses the northern
province of China.
In the eastern section, its height varies from 15 to 30 feet. There is a pathway on the top , wide
enough for six horse men to ride side by side. Parapets protect them from falling off. When the
wall was first built it had about 25,000 towers. The defenders could shoot the attackers from
Mongolia from these towers. The towers of the wall were used for sending signal with smoke or
flags by day and with fire by night. The Great Wall was built to strengthen the nation’s defences .
It acted as a boundary to keep wild nomads out from the north.
Its construction was started in about 221 B.C by emperor Qin Shi Huang. The man who did most
in carrying out the emperor’s plans was general Mang Tien who drove the Tartars back from the
Yellow River. Thousands of prisoners were put on job .In dry winds , snow storms and dust storms
, the work went on and many of the workers died also during its construction.
