To find:

The greatest number

Solution:

(1). Since both the numbers when divided leaves 2 as their remainders in each case, so we will subtract 2 from both the numbers,

270 - 2 = 268

84 - 2 =  82

(2). We will find the H.C.F. of 268 and 82 by using the prime factorisation method

Factors of 268 & 82:

268 = 2 × 2 × 67

82 = 2 × 41

H.C.F:

H.C.F. of 268 & 82 = 2

Thus, the greatest no. which divides 270 & 84 leaves a remainder 2 in each case is 2.
