The greatest number of oxidation states are exibited by the members in the middle of the transition series... why??

It's because the half filled orbitals are more stable.
Chromium is has electronic configuration of [Ar]4s1 d5 .it's supposed to be 4s2 d4 according to the rule.But d orbital Attracts an electron from s to attain half filled state d5 which more stable.Hence chromium has oxidation state of upto +6Next is Manganese, here s orbital is filled completely and d orbital has half filled configuration. So,its oxidation state can be up to +7The thing is,Half filled orbital are stable because electrons are at same spin.
It's a rule of nature,Every object tends to occupy a lowest energy state(stable state)
