The Green Revolution in late 1960s introduced the Indian farmers to cultivate wheat and rice using high yielding varieties ( HYV ) seeds. HYV seeds need plenty of water and also chemical fertilizers and pesticides for good results. Due to increased use of these chemical fertilizers and pesticides resulted with the loss of soil fertility.
