Answer:

Turmeric harvesting in full swing in the district (picture)

With area under cultivation of turmeric in the district higher this season compared to last season, a section of farmers fear drop in prices.

The crop, which is cultivated widely in Erode, Kodumudi, Modakurichi, Bhavani, Anthiyur and Gobichettipalayam areas and irrigated with the water from the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal and Kalingarayan Canal, is estimated to have been grown on 5,650 hectare (13,955 acre) this year as against 2,962 hectare (7,316 acre) in 2017-18.

Officials of the Horticulture Department said that turmeric cultivation in recent years stood at 6,292 hectare in 2014-15, 7,960 hectare in 2015-16 and 9,473 hectare in 2016-17.

Several farmers switched over to alternative crops such as sugarcane and maize last season as there was water shortage in the recent years for cultivating the 10 month crop. However, in the current season (from June/July 2018 to February/March 2019), due to availability of water, turmeric is widely cultivated in the district, including Kodumudi areas, where it was not cultivated last season due to drought, said V. Kuppan, a farmer of Ganapathipalayam. He said that with better water availability in the canals, more farmers have raised the crop for which harvests have begun.

“We expect price to be normal”, he added.
