Step-by-step explanation:

There is 2 methods to solve

1st method

96 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 = 2³ × 3²

72 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 = 2⁵ × 3¹

HCF is Highest Common Factors, that is, the least power of a prime number is taken

HCF = 2³ × 3¹ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 = 24

2nd method

This is a higher form of solving using the Euclids division Lemma

a = bq + r where 0 ⩽ r < b

Here a is the highest

so, a = 96 and b = 72

96 = 72 × 1 + 24

now we put a = 72(which was b) and b = 24(which was r)

72 = 24 × 3 + 0

So now we stop because the remainder became 0

So HCF = 24

Hope you understood it........All the best
