They are tiny, green, heart shaped, and photosynthetic structure about 1 mm thick, 3 to 10mm in length and 2 to 8mm broad.

It is not differentiated into root, stem and leaf. However, they consists of rhizoids that go deep into the soil to absorb water and minerals for them.

Prothallus has both organ female rgans(archaegonium) and female (antheredium) in same individual i.e the stage is called monoecious.
