The height of a cone is 30 cm. A small cone is cut off at the top by a plane parallel to the base. If its volume be 1/27 of the volume of the given cone, at what height abvoe the base is the section made?

H=30cm (given)

vol(small cone)= 1/27 of vol(given cone)

1/3πr²h=1/27*1/3πR²H

⇒r²h=1/27*R²H

r²/R²*h/H=1/27

h³/H³=1/27.                 (Since,h/H=l/L=r/R)

so,h/H=1/3

⇒H=3h

30=3h

∴h=10cm

∴height above base where section is made=30-10=20cm
