Given :  The heights (in nearest cm) of 63 students of a certain school are given in the frequency distribution table :

Height (in cm)

150 151 152 153 154 155 156

Number of students

9 12 10 8 11 7 6

To find : (i) Median (ii) Lower quartile (Qı) (iii) Upper quartile (Q3)

(iv) Interquartile range from the above data.

Solution:

             f           cf

150        9           9

151         12           21

152        10           31

153        8           39

154        11           50

155        7           57

156        6           63

Total Students = 63

Median student  = 32

32 - 39 Students are of height 153 cm

153 cm  is Median

Lower Quartile

31 Students  so

16th student will be Lower Quartile Q₁

10 - 21  ( 151 cm)

151 cm is Lower quartile Q₁

33 to 63 students

48th Students will be Upper  Quartile Q₃

154 cm is Upper  Quartile Q₃

IQR =Q₃  -  Q₃  = 154 - 151  = 3 cm

i) Median  - 153 cm

(ii) Lower quartile (Qı)    - 151 cm

(iii) Upper quartile (Q3)  - 154 cm

(iv) Interquartile range   3 cm
