Answer:

Tolerance comes from knowledge, understanding and compassion. An objective understanding of our personal selves and our strengths and especially our weaknesses would seem to me to help foster tolerance.

Education is merely a method and it is used to spread dogma at least as much as truth. And this is just as true in academia as anywhere else. Much of education EVERYWHERE is indoctrination. I hear academics talking about teaching critical thinking, and some of that probably does happen, somewhere.

The "romance" of academia is an attraction to many elitists who then foster elitism among their students.

I knew some very good and tolerant people during my years in university environments, but I noticed that the occurrence of racism was not much different than the general public. Feelings of superiority over pretty much everyone, including colleagues was common. Gossip and backstabbing were no less common than anywhere else that has people.

I have had some very good teachers over the years, but I think that is because they started out as good people. There is no filter in academia to keep out the other kind.
