√n ( n + 2)

n = no. of unpaired electron

1 - - - - - -> 1.7

2 - - - - - - > 2.8

3 - - - - - - > 3.9

4 - - - - - - > 4.9

5 - - - - - - -> 5.9

The transition metal include d orbital and it can have 5 unpaired electron maximum. So,

μ = 5.92 BM

answer : 5.916 BM

explanation : spin only magnetic moment is given by, \mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)} BM

where n is number of unpaired electrons.

in case of transition metals,

outmost orbit is d - subshell, that's why transition metal is also known as d - block elements. we know, maximum number of unpaired electrons in transition metal = 5

so, n = 5

then, magnetic moment , \mu=\sqrt{5(5+2)}=\sqrt{35}=5.916BM
