The Himalayas can be divided into three divisions:
The Greater Or Inner Himalayas
This is the north most and continuous range and is also known as Himadri. This range has loftiest peaks with an average height of the peak being 6000 meters. All the prominent peaks of Himalayas are in this range. These ranges are asymmetrical in nature, and the core of its part is composed of granite.
The Lesser Himalayas
This lies towards the south of the great Himalayas and is also known as Himachal. The altitude of the peaks in this range varies from 3700 meters to 4500 meters. This range is mainly composed of highly compressed and altered rocks.
The Outer Himalayas or the Siwalik Range.
This is the outermost range of the Himalayas. The altitude varies from 900 meters to 1100 metres. This range is composed of unconsolidated sediments.
