Himalayas was originated during 40 to 50 million years ago. This period is known as Eocene or Paleocene period.

About Himalayas:-

  • The moutain range which separate the Tibetan Plateau from the Indian Subcontinent is coming under the category of Young Fold mountains.  
  • It is youngest and the unstable landmass with commonly prone to Tectonic movements.
  • These are the parallel and converging ranges expanded from west to east.

It is divided into three parts:-

1. Outer Himalayas or Shiwaliks- With the altitude varies from 600 to 1500 meters, it is located between the Great Plains and the Lesser Himalayas.Its width varies from 50 km in Himachal to something less than 15 km in Arunachal Pradesh.

The formation of "Duns" are the special feature of Outer Himalayas or Shiwaliks.

2. Middle Himalayas or Lesser Himalayas- Its height varies from 3,500 to 4,500 m above the sea level with about 2400km in length.

Most of the Himalayan hills destination are located in this region like Shimla, Musoorie, Nainital etc.

3. Great Himalayas or Himadri- Having the avergae height of 6,100 km above the mean sea level, thes eare mostly formed of granites and gneisses.

The folds here are assymetrical and syntaxial bends are visible.
