The Housekeeper whistles the tune of, ‘Poison’ by Rita Ora as she pours tea into the ceramic kettle. She has been working in this house for over ten years, and knows every nook and corner like it were her own dwelling. She continues to hum, as she leaves the kitchen, expertly balancing a cup and saucer, kettle, biscuits and sugar on a small, but expensive tray. She has learnt, the hard way, that breaking anything in this house would lead to severe chastising, which she does not have the stomach for. She climbs up the stairs to the room of her employer, Amelia Pond. She has not prepared tea for Ms. Pond’s companion, certain that she would still be fast asleep. She knocks twice, and enters. She is confused to see Amelia still asleep, over the covers. Usually, she has brushed and freshened up, before tea arrives. She keeps the tray down and walks over. ‘Ms. Pond? Ms. Pond, please wake up. Tea is ready.’ The woman does not move. Worried that her age is finally affecting her hearing, she decides to shake her lightly. The moment she puts pressure on Amelia’s shoulder, her employer rolls over. (The Housekeeper screams, and backs up from the bed, colliding with the table. The tray slides off and tea splatters across the carpet, staining it pale pink.) When she regains her wits, she lifts two fingers and presses them against the neck of the woman. (No heartbeat.) She sighs, and walks to the phone in Amelia’s room, and rings up the police.
Within thirty minutes, the area is covered in Yellow Tape, the police are questioning the Housekeeper and Mrs. Dora, the companion, who was shaken awake by the Housekeeper, after the Police had been informed, and the Forensics Department is examining the body.
Amelia’s brother, Rory Pond, flies over from Los Angeles. Clad in a coat and thick gloves, he walks towards the Head Detective, and asks him, ‘What happened, Detective? Have you been able to identify the cause of death?’ The Detective gives him a quick look-over, and says, ‘Sir, it is too early to say anything definitive. We will conduct a post-mortem, and give you a detailed report once we have gathered sufficient information.’
‘Will it be okay if I stay in the house, officer, until everything is sorted out?’ The detective nods. Rory goes inside the House, delicately touching the paintings, artifacts that are his, now that his unmarried sister is dead. He calls up his wife and says, ‘Call the Packers and Movers. Our family will finally know what it is like to live in a palace.’
When they were younger, Amelia and Rory were close. They were born just two years apart, and Amelia was a doting elder sister. They fought, like most siblings do, but they were quick to make up. As they grew older, and their father grew sicker, the uncomfortable question of property distribution arose. Rory had assumed that being the son, he would get a larger share. Their father had other plans. In his Last Will and Testament, he gave his entire property to his daughter, his first-born, and provided for a certain amount of money to be transferred to Rory’s Bank Account, every month. Rory’s pride and his relationship with his sister were wounded.
Rory peeks inside the room his sister, like a true Matriarch, slept in. Officers are covering the body in a black body bag. Rory feels no remorse or sadness. He slips in, casually picking up certain things from her room, and putting them inside his jacket. He creeps inside the bathroom, and picks up a few toiletries, her shampoo, toothpaste, her gold-plated comb. It surprises him that despite their estrangement, they continue to have the same taste in brands. They find the refreshing taste of peppermint soothing, while his wife can never use peppermint toothpaste. Her allergy to it would make her choke. And then, why shouldn’t he start using what his sister has left behind? After all, he would need things to keep in the room he had in this house, when he was a child. He can start using everything once his own stock ran out. Smiling at himself in the mirror, he turns away, pulling the bathroom door shut.
