It is absolutely true the human mind is a complex and mysterious machine. Anil’s mind was full of creative, generous, compassionate thoughts; but Hari Singh’s mind was full of dishonest and bad thoughts. Two different minds thinking different thoughts.

Anil’s good, generous, trusting and credulous nature had a deep impact on Hari Singh. Anil started teaching him how to write complete sentences. When Hari Singh got an opportunity to run away with Anil’s money, he could not do that. This was the transformation. This transformation had been effected by Anil's generosity and goodness.

The poet has communicated deep thoughts through the poem 'The Ball Poem'.

Human beings get attached to the things of this world. Children have fascination for toys, young men or women are attached to their friends, family members, career, or anything else.

Once the attached thing is taken away, man becomes sad; he feels the lost thing is irreplaceable with any other thing.

The Ball Poem by John Berryman beautifully describes the state of mind of a boy who has lost his ball playing. He also gives a lesson full of wisdom that through loss every man or woman learns to bear the pain associated with loss.

The poet sees a boy who is playing with a ball. The ball bounces out of his control and falls into the water. The boy becomes sad at this. The poet feels no other ball given to the boy will lessen his sadness.

The lost ball stands for the general losses a human being suffers as he grows old. The losses may be the loss of a personal possession or the death of a dear one or separation from a beloved one. Using this metaphor the poet highlights the main point of coming to terms with the losses. As long as there is life, there will be many types of losses; what each one has to learn is bearing those losses.

The human mind is a complex and mysterious machine

Explanation:

The human mind is a labyrinth of thoughts influenced by one's background and thoughts. We find two people with different thought process, Anil who is a generous and compassionate person while Hari Singh is a dishonest person. But Anil due to his inherent goodness is able to accept Hari and teach him how to write sentences. This acceptance and generosity of Anil has a profound change on Hari's thinking who is unable to steal even when he gets the opportunity.
