I agree with the fact that Wanda was not just being teased, she was also being ragged on the basis of racism. Wanda is a poor Polish girl who has come with her family to the US along with the Polish immigration. She was the only outsider of her class. People found it funny to have a long, unfamiliar name like Wanda Petronski. The girls made it a habit to have 'fun' with her by bothering her after school hours, by playing a game in which they would ask Wanda how many dresses and shoes she had and she would respectively reply that she had a hundred dresses and sixty pairs of shoes, all different. The girls knew that Wanda was lying, yet they found it fun to make fun of her by often asking her about her dresses. They often ragged her every single day, when Wanda was present to school.
This indirectly shows discrimination based on nationality, racism, name and status. Poor Wanda was left with no choice but to bear with all these insults. Yet she proved herself worthy by winning the drawing competition. The story contains the moral that we must not judge others based on our origins and status, but on the basis of the qualities which they possess.
