The hybrid state of S in SO3 is similar to that of C in C2H4.

  • SO3 hybridization includes both sigma and pi bonds.
  • SP^2 is the hybridization of SO3 for the central sulphur atom.
  • and
  • The hybridization of  C in C2H4 is SP^2

C in C₂H₄ is the correct option.

Explanation:

  • Sulphur is a group 16 element with atomic number of 16.
  • This element has the electronic configuration of [Ne] 3s2 3p4.
  • So it has 6 electrons in its outermost shell.
  • With oxygen, it forms two covalent bonds - one pie and one sigma bond.
  • Thus it gets it's octet complete.
  • But it has 2 lone pairs of electrons.
  • And oxygen is much electronegative than sulphur.
  • So it donates the lone pairs to 2 of the oxygens forming a total of 3 bonds.
  • Thus the hybridization of sulphur becomes sp2.
  • Hybridization of carbon in ethene is sp2.
  • So they are of same hybridization.
