Let the base be a
Perpendicular = a
Hypotenuse = sqrt ( a^2 + a^2)
=> 5^2 = 2a^2
=> 25 /2 = a^2
=> a = 5 / root2
Base = 5 / root2
Perpendicular = 5 / root2
Area = Base × Perpendicular / 2
= 1/2 ( 5 / root2) (5 / root2)
= 1/2 ( 25 /2)
= 25 /4
= 6.25 cm^2
