Question ---- The
hypotenuse of a right triangle is 17cm long. If one of the remaining two sides is of length 8cm, find the length of the third side.

Answer ----------

we know that in a right triangle
H^2 = P^2 + B^2
H^2 - P^2 = B^2
B = √(H^2 - P^2) ------------------(a)

where,
H is hypotenuse = 17cm
P is perpendicular = 8cm
and B is base = x cm
Now putting values in (a)

B=

 \sqrt{ {17}^{2} - {8}^{2} }
B =
 \sqrt{289 - 64}
B =
 \sqrt{125}
B = 15cm

I. e., length of third side is 14 cm
