Answer: x=10 or 2

Step-by-step explanation:

(4+2x)^2 +x^2= (6+2x)^2 {pythagorous property)

16+4x6^2+16x=36+24x+4x6^2

on simplifying

x^2-8x=20

x^2- 8x -20 =0

x^2 -10x +2x -20 =0 {splitting the mid term}

x(x-10)+2(x-10)=0

(x-2)(x-10)=0

hence x=2 or 10

hence shorter side is 2 or 10
