Aadhar is the authentication of an Indian citizen, based on their demographic details as well as biometric details. These details are stored and managed by the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR), a central government agency.
CIDR is managed and regulated by the Unique Identification Authority of India or UIDAI.
In Aadhar authentication API, the Aadhar number of user and other attributes like biometric and demographic data are submitted to CIDR, online, for verification using documents and other data available with it.
