The illustration below shows two person sitting on the swing, person 1 with a mass of 36 kg and person 2 with a mass of 65 kg. Vince, Bea and Andrei were arguing the acceleration of the two person on the swing. To whom statement you agree and why?

Vince: if person 1 and person 2 apply equal force both of them will have the same acceleration.

Bea: the person with lesser mass moves with greater acceleration

Andrei: the one which greater force is applied moves with greater acceleration

I agree with the idea of Bea because - a body with lesser mass will move with greater acceleration if the force of the same magnitude is applied.

  • As we know from Newton's second law of motion, force is the product of mass and acceleration.
  • Thus, m \:\alpha \frac{1}{a}\: [when \:F=constant]
  • Now, the same force is applied to both the swings. In this, case the person with lesser mass will move with greater acceleration. Thus, Bea's statement is true.
  • As we have seen above, if the same force is applied, the person with less mass will have greater acceleration. Thus, the statement of Vince is not true as he says both will have the same acceleration.
  • With an increase in force, acceleration will be more if both had the same mass. But, here both have different masses. So, this statement will not always hold true.
